Customizing Widgets in YOOtheme's Widgetkit 2.x

Although YOOtheme's documentation says to store customizations in Widgetkit 2.x:

Place your custom content provider in THEME-NAME/widgetkit/content/PROVIDER-NAME/
Place your custom widget plugin in THEME-NAME/widgetkit/widgets/WIDGETPLUGIN-NAME/

http://yootheme.com/widgetkit/documentation/customizing/where-to-store-your-customizations

It does not explain WHERE to get the original files to modify.  In Widgetkit 1.5.x, they were in:

media/widgetkit/widgets/WIDGET_NAME/

However, I just figured out that in Widgetkit 2.x, they are in:

administrator/components/com_widgetkit/plugins/widgets/WIDGET_NAME/

As an example,

JomSocial Installer Loop

JomSocial Installer Loop

When upgrading JomSocial one of the sites we manage, it successfully completed but got stuck in an endless loop of the JomSocial installer whenever you tried to go to JomSocial from the menu.  After searching the JomSocial forums, I found a few other people with issue but no clear instructions on how to fix.  After figuring it out, I figured I would throw together a blog to help others (and for when it happens to me again in a few months and I get annoyed that I didn't write down the solution).

To escape the JomSocial installer loop, do these steps:

Installing Joomla on IIS/Windows Server

Installing Joomla on an IIS server can be a royal pain in the butt and I always recommend switching to a LINUX server whenever possible.  However, for those times that it isn't, here are some steps to help you out.

I will try to go back and grab some screenshots to improve the post, but here is the meat and potatoes for now:

From  PLESK account

Go to Control Panel->Websites & Domains

"Unable to Load Format Class" Error on Upgrade to Joomla 3.3

As of right now, we are unsure of the cause of this error, but have had it occur on about 10% of upgrades so far.  Here are the steps to get you back live again:

1. Go to Joomla.org and download the full package of 3.2.4:

http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/?action=FrsReleaseBrowse&frs_package_id=6882

2. Using FTP, upload all of package, except the /installation/ folder

3. Once done, go to your /cache/ folder and delete all files except index.html

4. Go to phpmyadmin and delete all rows in SESSIONS table (example, DELETE FROM `jos_session`)

When we encountered this error, the final result was it was caused by an outdated version of the JPayPlans component.

Top Ten Mistakes for Joomla Upgrades

Top Ten Mistakes for Joomla Upgrades

We have easily done over 50 Joomla upgrades over the last year.  Over that time, we have developed a pretty good checklist of common problems and how to migrate most 3rd party extensions.  However, those lessons were learned after knocking our heads against the wall plenty.

In an effort to save you some of that headache, here are the Top Ten Mistakes for Joomla Upgrades we have compiled.  Feel free to leave comments with specific questions, as we tried to pick items that would apply to everyone.

500 Server Error Only for Googlebot in Joomla

500 Server Error Only for Googlebot in Joomla

While trying to set up a new landing page for our maintenance services, I ran into a problem where the page would load just fine for me and on 3rd party tools like BrowserStack, but it was returning a 500 server error for Googlebot.  It would also return a 500 server error for W3C Validation and Spider View checks.  I would have never even noticed it had Google Adwords not disapproved the page URL repeatedly.

This was completely perplexing to me and took several hours to troubleshoot.  In researching the issue, the only possible leads I found were some older forum posts mentioning both the core Joomla {loadposition} plugin for modules and the NoNumbers Modules Anywhere plugin.  I was not using the Joomla loadposition and disabling Modules Anywhere did not change the error code.

I contacted our hosting company HostGator who found nothing from their end. In systemically disabling items, I found the culprit to be RSForms Pro by RSJoomla.  It did not matter whether our signup form was loaded as a menu item, module, or in the content plugin (like { rsform 4 }), it would give the 500 server error for Googlebot.

How to add Event Tracking with Google Analytics

How to add Event Tracking with Google Analytics

Normally when I want to use Conversion Tracking for Google Analytics and Google Adwords for a form, I just track the link of the "Thank You" page.  However, I needed a way to track users clicking the button to use our ZenDesk form. To do that, you need "Event Tracking."

1. Login to you Google Analytics for your site and click on ADMIN.

2. Under VIEW, click on the GOALS link.

Fixing Magic Quotes for Joomla 3.x

Fixing Magic Quotes for Joomla 3.x

If you have ever installed a new Joomla 3.x website or moved a Joomla site from one server to another, you may have gotten the error for needing to disable Magic Quotes.  This can seem easier said than done depending on your hosting company.

We compiled a quick guide for how to figure out whether it's enabled, how to change it, and how to troubleshoot it when that STILL doesn't work.

As a disclaimer, messing with server settings can seriously mess up your website.  If you have that feeling like "hmm, should I be doing this??" then you might want to hire a professional to fix it for you.  If you feel like you just need to know where to go, then read on!

What is Magic Quotes?

At its most basic level, it is the setting within PHP that allows quotation marks to be allowed or stripped out of a string.

Auto Adding Social Media Icons to Links Using CSS and Font Awesome

Font Awesome for IconsEver wanted to have social media icons automatically appear next to any link that went to Facebook, Twitter, etc?  We decided to add this to our website portfolio to display the link to the new website, as well as our client's social media links.  However, having several links stacked together was confusing without the icons.

Those rules translated into use, look like:

Installing a Joomla site on Network Solutions, updated for Joomla 3.x

Installing a Joomla site on Network Solutions, updated for Joomla 3.x

I wrote a blog awhile ago about building a Joomla website on Network Solutions, and it is one of the most popular blogs on the site.

Since it is very outdated, here is a revised version for installing Joomla 3.x onto Network Solutions Hosting.

When you get to the install process, it will tell you all the default problems with Network Solutions configuration:

Network Solutions makes it harder to modify these because it does not recognize a custom php.ini.

Broken Extensions in Joomla 3.1.4

Broken Extensions in Joomla 3.1.4

It looks like the upgrade to Joomla 3.1.4 can cause headaches for many extensions.  If you haven't upgraded yet, I would hold off till 3.1.5.

Apparently the new release can cause problems with some "views":

http://docs.joomla.org/J3.1:Extensions_Broken_in_3.1.4

Since upgrading our maintenance clients, we have found problems with:

As we find more, we will update this blog.  In the near term, disabling these will allow the website to work properly.

In troubleshooting, I suggest looking at plugins that affect the front end rendering, like content plugins.

Know of other extensions?  Please let us know in the comments.

This is how to re-direct existing URLs to the new path after moving the site.

SCENARIO: Client has a website in a subfolder on their server such as /folder/ so that the links currently indexed by google might be something like:

Fix Out of Date PHP

Fix Out of Date PHP

More and more extensions are requiring PHP 5.3.  If you are getting warnings, there are two main ways of switching your website over to PHP 5.3

Using .htaccess

Towards the top of your .htaccess, add:

# Use PHP 5.3AddType application/x-httpd-php53.php

Change in Control Panel of Hosting

Look for "CGI and Scripted Language Support"

Then go to "PHP Scripting"

Set "Select Default PHP Version" to PHP 5.3

How to Build a Joomla Site on Network Solutions (if you must)

Overall, my suggestion would be to never bother with Network Solutions because there are too many other good hosting companies (see my post on Hosting Companies). However, if you find a situation where you absolutely HAVE to, then this is what I finally figured out. This is after finishing a project my company lost money doing because of the many, many extra hours dealing with Network Solutions....
